Class Participation

There are two components to participation points worth a total of 25 points.

  • In weeks 2, 7, 8, and 10, you will receive points for participating in the Wednesday discussion labs (i.e. submitting discussion questions before the session or speaking during the session). Each session is worth 5 points for a total of 20.
  • For the policy memo project (see below), you will be given an effort score by your group members. This is worth up to 5 points. Only effort matters to grading, and the instructors will review all peer scores.

Reading Questions

Short reading questions will be assigned for weeks 2, 3, and 5-12. These will be basic questions (i.e. if you do the readings you will know the answers). Each week’s questions will be assigned on Thursday the week prior and are due before 8am on Monday. Each week’s questions will be worth 1.5 points for a total of 15 points.

Mapping Mason Project

As a class, we will create an online map of how and where Mason students, faculty, and staff interact with their environment. This includes both the things that we can see (e.g. recycling and waste) and aspects that can be less visibly apparent (e.g. air and water pollution).

Either by yourself or with a partner, you will identify a place on Mason’s Fairfax campus where people have a direct or indirect interaction with their environment. The interaction can either be positive or negative. In a short summary, you will identify the social reasons the interaction occurs and the human and environmental consequences.

Your map entries are due before 8am on Feb 13. During one class in week 4, you will walk your classmates to the location where the interaction occurs and present your findings.

Systems Modeling Report

When considering human-environment interactions, we will emphasize the importance of doing so through a systems lens, a concept we will focus on during weeks 5-7. To further familiarize you with this concept, you will analyze a complex policy outcome provided by the instructors using a combination of a short written report and a LOOPY model.

We will have a discussion lab about your results on Wednesday Mar 8. The report and model are due before 8am on Mar 8.

Policy Memo Project

The capstone project for this course is a policy memo on an environmental issue broadly defined to be related to this course. The topic will be decided in consulation with the instructors.

You will complete the project in teams of 5-6 students through a combination of individual and group tasks that are due during weeks 12-14. To satisfy the Mason Impact and CECiL components of this course, you will present your policy recommendations to a relevant external audience during week 14.
